The Hugo Group’s Guide to Whiskey and Food Pairings

What’s even better than sharing a few of your favourite drinks with friends on a lazy summer evening? Sharing them over some delicious food, of course! To give you some inspiration, our team of foodies at Hugo’s have come up with some expert tips for complementing your glass of whiskey with favourite dish, here at Hugo’s Terrace.

Cheese 

Because of its fat content, cheese slows down the absorption of alcohol into the bloodstream, making it an ideal partner for whiskey. Additionally, whiskey that has not been barrel aged is free from tannins (unlike wine), meaning that it won’t overpower the taste of the cheese, allowing all the flavours to stand out and linger on the palate.

Grilled steaks

If there’s one whiskey pairing you can never go wrong with, it’s definitely this one. Whiskeys with a deep, smoky flavour goes well with the the meatiness and texture of a well-done, grilled steak. Choose a whiskey that is ideally medium bodied and rich.

Seafood and spicy meals

Light bodied Japanese whiskies serve a beautiful contrast with spicier meals and hot sauces. Neither flavour dominates the other, and the whiskey itself provides a slight hint of sweetness to the palate. As for seafood meals, the slight tanginess of the whiskey really brings out the full flavours of the fish, particularly with ingredients such as salmon, mussels and smoked swordfish.

Sweets and cakes

Because there’s always room for dessert! We highly suggest the hugely popular Bourbon Street, available on our dessert menu across all Hugo’s venues. Our chefs have follows a simple and classic recipe, adding a punch of southern bourbon and a layer of walnuts. Topping it all off is a scattering of white chocolate flakes. Yes please! The perfect sweet companion to your glass of whiskey.
