Coffee not Covfefe! Hugo Chetcuti’s Guide to Coffee

Drinking a freshly-brewed cappuccino or a piping hot caffe latte is a bit like slipping into an old sweater – you’ve done it often but it still feels oh so good every single time. Hugo Chetcuti always makes it a point of starting his busy work day with a caffeinated beverage to kickstart a morning meeting. We’ve assembled a short but sweet coffee guide for you to enjoy as you sip your post-dinner espresso.

When in Rome… don’t order a cappuccino at 3pm

In Italy, ordering this milky drink after 10am is tatamount to breaking a religious commandment. That’s right: our Mediterranean brothers would clutch their pearls in horror at the sight of someone downing such heavy contents during the late hours of the afternoon. That being said, a cappuccino ordered just after noon works as the perfect accompaniment to brunch. It may not be the drink of choice after a big lunch for obvious reasons, however the lactose acts as an energy boost that lasts for a good few hours.

Sweeten your day with a lavishly-prepared latte

A lovely combination of steamed milk and a dash of espresso, this drink is normally served in a tumbler or a tall glass. Skilled baristas know how to arrange the foam on top to create pretty pictures like hearts or flowers as a final touch.

Energising Espressos

Wash down a heavy supper with this small but effective strong black coffee.  The caffeine in espressos is a lot stronger when compared to other coffees, so it combats the drowsiness frequently felt after large meals. Make it longer by ordering an Espresso Lungo; more water is added to increase the content of the drink causing it to become more nuanced and flavoursome. Otherwise, moderate the strong taste of the coffee with a shot of foamed milk to create an Espresso Macchiato.

Pa Pa l’Americano

This is a twist on the short black espresso made with four or five ounces of hot water and a single or double shot of the coffee. It derives its name from its popularity in the United States, and may have its origins in World War II when American soldiers would order espresso with hot water to dilute it to their accustomed taste.

Along with Hugo Chetcuti’s choice of refreshing cocktails and wide variety of spirits, Hugo’s Terrace offers an assorted choice of both classic and speciality coffees in St. Julian’s.
